Resistance is Futile. – or is it?

I wouldn’t call myself a hard core Trekkie (I’ve seen a movie or two and even watched my fair share of the original series), but this quote has been on rotation throughout my mind of late.

Now I’m not in the midst of taking over an Alien race – but I have been

elbow deep in some resistance of late

– the internal kind –  and as I’m wading my way through the murky waters – I’m starting to appreciate just exactly what this resistance can teach me.

And I know that it is here to teach me something.

Those things that keep showing up – are showing up for a reason.

So I am slowing things down (again) and getting curious so that I can learn this lesson and step up to the next level.

What is interesting though is the way I used to deal with Resistance. I like to think of resistance as a great big wall – it seems as high as it is wide – and impossible to get around or over. In the good ol’ days (less than a year ago), my reaction to resistance was a life long habit. It pretty much involved me hurtling around without much direction, intention or presence. And needless to say I would often come up against this internal resistance – often undetected – until I had smacked my face right in the centre of it, bounced off with such force that I simply changed direction. And continued on without intention or presence until I banged against another wall. I find it quite amusing in retrospect to imagine myself literally bouncing off all the walls. But needless to say it was not terribly pleasant while it was happening.

So how have things changed? Well first of all I got my intention setting butt into gear and started practising presence. Still without much direction I just kept putting one foot in front of the other. And soon enough there was a big fat wall right in front of me. My first reaction (and quite a lot of reactions after that first one) was to just turn my back on the wall and change direction – since I didn’t really have a direction, this kind of worked for me.

But now that I have somewhere that I want to go and some goals that I want to achieve (after releasing my should list – I’ve come out the other side with a healthier approach!), I have to readjust my reaction to the wall of resistance. And what does that change look like?

Well now I’m spending time just hanging out at the wall – chatting with the universe – checking out the fault lines – dusting away some of the loose mortar in between the bricks – placing my hands on the wall to see if I can feel the energy from the other side – putting my ear up and listening – gently testing the foundations – all in the name of curiosity.

I’m getting my curiosity clogs on for the first time in like FOREVER.

So this wall in your path?

Is it a waste of space?

I think not!

I believe that inner Resistance is here to teach us that there is some exploration to be done – a chance to get to
know yourself – gain some extra clarity. There is a chance to hand your fear and resistance over to the universe and allow yourself to receive some guidance rather than just focusing on what is on the other side – and feeling dejected that you can’t reach it. Spend some time at the wall and it will begin to diminish – it may be easier to see a way around or over it – it may even start to crumble.  Instead of running in the opposites direction – hang out there for a while – learn the lesson and keep reaching for the other side –

after all in the words of George Addair

“Everything you’ve ever wanted is on the other side of fear.”

  1. Ah Lisa I love this. You are so so right. So often in life we run from the things that we are resisting. The things that make us feel uncomfortable and icky. In actual fact, as you so rightly point out, it is just these things that we need to be paying close ad gentle attention to. These cues are often the gateway to something beautiful and life changing. Aahhh, love, love. Thank you for sharing sweet lady. X

    • Thanks sweet Che. I love how long sometimes it takes me to get these messages (and sometimes to get them again and again!) – I can hear that party that’s in full swing on the other side – I’ll meet you there! xx
